Boy the southern hospitality sure as hell stops when one tries to find a place
to pitch a tent. Finally talk[ed] a fellow into letting me pitch a tent in his
field. All day was kind [of] neat. The roads were quite nice. Ate lunch at
Elizabethton. Eatin' breakfast at a truck stop where life revolves around a CB.
I've a slight case of the trots but I'll live. I'm in two minds whe[ther] to
go straight to Kansas or wander around; right now I'm for straight.

Somewhere in Tennessee, I think the day my tire went out, the 23rd, I was riding
down a beautiful country road, when I heard a noise and then there was a six inch
field rat crawling up my leg. The poor bugger had hit my front spokes and had gotten
thrown up on my leg. Needless to say we were both equally as scared and I weaved
all over the road trying to it off me. Luckily no cars were coming.
Since then I have also had a squirrel do the same thing and have heard other accounts
from people of the similar encounters. I am not sure what you can do to prepare yourself
for this, but when it happens it is something you will never forget.
